When procuring a valve, the most common request is simply to quote a DN200 valve. But valves are not off-the-shelf parts. If you pick the wrong type, even with the correct size and pressure class, it may leak, vibrate, or fail to control stably in service.

Ball, butterfly and gate valves are the three most common on-off and control valves in industrial pipelines. They all open and close flow, yet their structures, sealing ability and cost differ greatly. This article compares them so you can decide which to use.

1. Structure of the Three Valve Types

  • Ball valve: a bored sphere inside the body rotates 90 degrees to open or close; flow passes almost straight through the bore.
  • Butterfly valve: a disc (the butterfly plate) turns on a shaft; parallel to the pipe is fully open, perpendicular is closed.
  • Gate valve: a wedge or parallel gate moves up and down to open or block the flow path; fully raised, the path is clear.

Structure defines each strength: the ball valve wins on sealing, the butterfly on compact large bore, the gate on full-bore low pressure drop.

2. Ball Valve: Best Sealing, Widest Use

The ball and seat have large contact area; soft seats such as PTFE readily achieve zero leakage, and metal seats cover most duties.

Key advantages:

  • Fast operation, 90 degrees to travel;
  • Low flow resistance, almost no pressure loss when open;
  • Reliable sealing, suited to gas, vacuum and toxic media;
  • Simple, easy to maintain.

The downside: cost and size rise quickly at large bore; soft seats fail in high temperature or abrasive service.

3. Butterfly Valve: Large Bore, Light, Economical

Above DN300 the butterfly valve shines. For the same DN600, a butterfly may weigh a fraction of a gate valve.

  • Compact, small footprint, good for dense piping;
  • Low cost, especially at large bore;
  • Some throttling possible, but range is narrower than a ball or control valve;
  • Elastomeric seat limits temperature and pressure.

Butterflies suit water treatment, ventilation, cooling water and other high-flow, low-to-medium pressure services.

4. Gate Valve: Full Bore, Low Loss, but Not for Throttling

Fully open, the gate bore equals the pipe, so flow passes with minimal obstruction and lowest pressure drop.

  • Ideal for fully open/closed duty where throttling loss is unacceptable;
  • Sealing faces avoid flow erosion, long life;
  • Slow operation, long stroke, and unsuitable for flow control — partially open, the gate suffers erosion, vibration and noise.

5. Throttling and Flow Characteristic Comparison

Aspect Ball Butterfly Gate
Main use On-off / rough trim On-off / large flow Full open/close
Control ability Good Fair Poor
Seal class Excellent Medium Good
Large-bore cost High Low Medium-high

6. Reading Seal and Leakage Class

If tightness matters, look at the ball valve first. Soft-seated balls reach zero visible leakage in normal duty; metal-seated gates also achieve very low leakage; butterfly elastomer seats seal well but may weep after long throttling wear.

For toxic, flammable or high-purity media, specify a leakage class rather than just saying it must close.

7. Pressure and Temperature Range

  • Ball: mature from low to high pressure; metal seat extends to high temperature;
  • Butterfly: seat material limits extreme temperature/pressure;
  • Gate: wide pressure-temperature coverage, common in steam and oil service.

Real limits depend on body material, seat type and flange standard, not just bore.

8. Space and Weight

In tight spaces the butterfly is friendliest — thin, light, small. Ball valves need lateral room, especially with actuators. Gates are tallest; the stem rises well above the body when fully open, requiring clearance for lifting and maintenance.

9. Cost Is More Than Purchase Price

Item Ball Butterfly Gate
Initial cost Medium-high Low Medium
Large-bore edge Weak Strong Medium
Maintenance Easy Easy Medium
Life (throttling) Long Medium Short (if misused)

Do not compare only the quote. A wrong-type valve's later replacement, downtime and labor usually exceed the price difference.

10. Quick Selection Checklist

Before requesting a quote, answer: what is the medium? size and pressure class? temperature range? throttling or on-off only? sealing requirement? available space? rough budget?

With these answered, the supplier can propose the right type instead of trial and error among three.

11. Two Common Myths

  • Myth 1: large bore means gate. At large bore, consider the butterfly first unless full-bore zero loss is required.
  • Myth 2: any valve can throttle. Balls and butterflies trim roughly, but precise control belongs to dedicated control valves.

Summary

None of the three is absolutely better — only more or less suitable. Remember: for sealing choose ball, for large bore choose butterfly, for full-bore low loss choose gate.

State the duty clearly and pick the right type, and the valve will truly be worth the money and stable in service.

  • 开关迅速,90 度即可到位;
  • 流阻小,全开时几乎不损失压力;
  • 密封可靠,适合气体、真空和有毒介质;

  • 结构紧凑,占用空间小,适合密集管线;
  • 成本低,大口径尤其划算;
  • 可实现一定调节,但调节区间不如球阀和专用调节阀;

  • 适合需要全开全关、不允许节流损失的工况;
  • 密封面不易受流体冲刷,寿命长;

  • 球阀:中低压到高压均有成熟产品,硬密封可上高温;
  • 蝶阀:受阀座材料限制,高温高压工况需特殊设计;
