Ordinary valves only consider on-off and sealing, but in petrochemical, oil-gas and pharma service a valve must also survive three things: fire, static and invisible trace leakage.
That is where fire-safe, anti-static and low fugitive emission design come from. This article explains them plainly.
1. Fire-Safe: Still Closes in a Fire
In a fire the soft seat (e.g., PTFE) burns away and the valve may lose sealing. Fire-safe design aims so that even if the soft seat burns, the metal seat backs it up and holds the medium, stopping fire spreading along the line.
Typical measures:
- A metal seat behind the soft seat as second line of defense;
- Stem with blow-out proof structure, not ejected in fire;
- Verified by fire tests such as API 607.
2. Anti-Static: No Spark Ignition
Moving metal parts inside a valve can generate static by friction. In flammable service a spark can ignite the medium.
Anti-static design leads charge away through a conductive path:
- Ball-to-stem and stem-to-body conductive structure in ball valves;
- Resistance below the standard limit;
- With grounding, no buildup discharge.
3. Low Fugitive Emission: Manage the Invisible Leak
Many media (VOC, toxic gas) harm safety and environment even in trace leakage over time. Environmental and safety rules tighten steadily.
Low-emission design targets the stem packing trace leak:
- Low-emission packing and multiple seals;
- Optimized gland structure;
- Leak rate tested per ISO 15848 and similar.
4. Standards in One Line
| Standard | Covers |
|---|---|
| API 607 | Fire test for soft-seated valves |
| API 6FA | Valve fire (broader) |
| ISO 15848 | Fugitive emission (packing leak) |
| API 608/609 | Ball/butterfly general requirements |
When procuring, do not just say compliant — state the clause and class.
5. What to Confirm When Buying
- Fire: need API 607 certificate? does metal seat still close after soft seat burns?
- Anti-static: conductive path and resistance test required?
- Low emission: class (e.g., ISO 15848 A/B), test medium and temperature;
- Stem: blow-out proof?
6. Common Myths
- Myth: ordinary valves are fire-safe. Without fire structure a valve may fully fail after burning.
- Myth: no big leak means fine. Environmental rules set clear limits on trace emission.
7. Link to Earlier Topics
Anti-static and fire-safe pair with fail position (FC/FO): on fire or power loss the valve should sit at the safer position. String these safety logics together rather than viewing one alone.
Summary
In flammable and environment-sensitive service, valves must pass fire-safe, anti-static and low fugitive emission. State the required certificates, classes and test conditions clearly so the valve, in extremis, both closes and neither ignites nor silently leaks.

- 阀座背后设金属密封作为第二道防线;
- 阀杆设防吹出结构,火中不会冲出;
- 球阀的球体与阀杆、阀杆与阀体间有导电结构;
- 确保电阻小于标准限值;
- 采用低逸散填料和多重密封;
- 优化填料压盖结构;
- 防火:是否需要 API 607 证书,软密封烧后金属密封是否仍关严;
- 防静电:是否要求导电通路和电阻测试;
- 低逸散:泄漏等级(如 ISO 15848 A/B 级)、测试介质与温度;
